eBooks: Add Safari eBooks to your Moodle Class

Safari Tech Books Online is a collection of over 16,000 technology, digital media and business books available free of charge for Columbia College Chicago faculty, staff and students.  These books are great source for reference or supplemental reading and review material for your classes.  And, it’s easy to include links to these online books in your Moodle or OASIS class site for quick access by your students!

Start Reading
Last week I talked about how to browse the Safari Tech Books Online library and select an eBook to Start Reading.  Once you’ve clicked on the Start Reading button, you will see your eBook displayed in the reader window.  The interactive Table of Contents appears on the left-hand side of the page.  You can move directly to a specific chapter or page by clicking the listing in the table of contents.

 

Get the Right URL!

Once you’ve selected the chapter or selection you’d like to have your students read you need to get the correct URL to use in your Moodle class.  There is a URL button in the tool bar across the top of the reader window.

Click on the URL Button and the URL for that particular chapter will be displayed, ready for you to copy and paste into Moodle.

Don’t paste that URL yet!
Before you paste that URL into your Moodle link, it is very important that you add this to the beginning of the URL:

http://emils.lib.colum.edu/login?url=

This will allow your students to view the Safari eBook when they are off-campus.  It makes for a very long URL to paste into Moodle but it’s very important that you remember to add this prefix.  Without this prefix your students won't be able to authenticate into the Safari database.

So, the complete URL you need to paste into Moodle will look something like this:

http://emils.lib.colum.edu/login?url=http://proquest.safaribooksonline.com/book/-/9780240814254/chapter-1-essential-techniques/3

How Do I Find a Book?

Does the idea of tracking down a book in the Library fill you with dread? Help is on the way...

To find a book, you have to know two things: call number and floor. The call number is a series of numbers, letters, and a decimal point. Look for the call number in the book information in Library Search.

The Library has different collections (Scores, Career, Reserves, Film Scripts) on 5 floors. The biggest is the Main Collection on floors 3, 4, and 5. Call numbers of books in the Main Collection do not indicate which floor the book is on.

Here's a cheat sheet:

Main Collection Call Number Locations
001-739 - 3rd floor
740-799 - 4th floor
800-999 - 5th floor

Don't memorize that! Just check the floor guides near the elevators. Or use the floor directory.

1. Once you find the right floor, look for the first three numbers in the call number. These are in number order: 800 comes before 803, which comes before 810.

2. Now look for any numbers that come after the decimal point. These are in decimal order: 800.01 comes before 800.1, which comes before 800.25.

3. Then look for a letter, in alphabetical order: 800.01 G comes before 800.01 R, which comes before 800.01 Y.

If you can't find a book, ask a Library staff person for help. Hope this makes finding a book easier!

Entry card must be filled out and placed in entry box (located at library 2^nd floor reference desk) for random drawing. One entry per person. No purchase necessary to enter or receive a prize. Odds of winning will depend on the total number of entries received. Library staff and family members are ineligible to participate. Entrants must be teaching at least one course at Columbia College Chicago at the time of the drawing. The book selection in the Safari digital library covers a wide range of topics (click here for a complete listing of all the Safari Tech Book categories available).  You can browse for books by category, conduct a keyword search, view recently added titles, most popular titles or scroll through the 16,000 titles listed by date, popularity or alphabetical order.

Start Reading

Once you've found the book you want to read, click the START READING button.

This will take you to a page that contains an interactive table of contents, your eBook text and a selection of tools icons across the top of the page that will help you interact with your eBook.

Are you ready to go on Safari?
I’m hoping that you are familiar with the college’s subscription to Lynda.com and are already taking advantage of the hundreds of technology training videos available to Columbia faculty, staff and students free of charge.  But did you know that there are thousands of  technology ebooks available for you use for free through the  Safari Tech Books Online subscription at the Columbia College Chicago Library?

What are Safari Tech Books Online?
Safari Tech Books Online was started in 2001 by O’Reilly Media, Inc. and Pearson Technology Group with the aim of gathering the best technology books available and creating an on-demand digital library.  Today over 40 publishers participate in creating content for this online library of over 15,000 ebooks.  Look for books by publishers such as Adobe Press, Peachpit Press, Microsoft Press, APress, SAMS and more.

What kind of Technology eBooks are available?
One of the advantages of a collection like Safari Tech Books Online is their ability to keep the eBook content up-to-date.  It is easy for Safari to update the online library so that new eBooks can be uploaded as soon as they are released, letting you keep current in your training as software versions change.   You can view a complete listing of eBook categories available which include topics and products that range from Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop, to computer programming and Web Design, to accounting and project management, to Skype, Facebook and Twitter.


Where can I find Safari Tech Books Online?
All of the Safari Tech books are discoverable when you search the Library Catalog.  However, if you would like to see just the Safari Tech Book Online collection, click on the Databases A-Z link on the Library’s main page and then scroll down to the Safari Link under the S Tab.

Jo Cates wins Alumni Achievement Award from Simmons

Jo Cates

Jo Cates, Associate Vice President of Academic Research and Dean of the Library has been awarded the 2012 Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) Alumni Achievement Award from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts.  Dean Cates holds an undergraduate degree in Journalism from Boston University, and a M.S. in Library Science from Simmons College.

Her selection by the Alumni Board indicates that she has "demonstrated excellence in a way that exceeds the boundaries of her position, and achieved national and international influence as an outstanding role model for library and information professionals". 

Dean Cates will be honored at the Simmons GSLIS Alumni Annual Gala in April.

Chicago Journalists Association Illustrations

Come view selected political cartoons and illustrations from the Chicago Journalists Association collection, most on display for the first time in nearly thirty years.  Chicago Journalists Association is a non-profit organization of experienced print and electronic journalists in the Chicago area that was founded during the Chicago World’s Fair.

During the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893, Chicago journalists met while covering the event.  Forty years later, on August 12, 1933, at the second Chicago World Fair, the Century of Progress, a reunion of the press veterans of 1893 was held, a board was formed, and the organization began to meet once a year.

In 1939, Joseph C. Davis, a sportswriter, led the promotion of the Chicago Press Veterans Association and widened its membership base. This organization of professional journalists held its first annual dinner in December 1939 and the association was incorporated in 1942. 
In 2011, the Chicago Journalists Association donated the collection to College Archives and Digital Collections at Columbia College Chicago for curricular support and research use.

Where's my Wikipedia? Many sites go dark

Today, a number of websites (including Wikipedia) are going "dark" for 24 hours in protest of two upcoming Congressional bills, the "Stop Online Privacy Act" (SOPA) and "Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act of 2011" (PIPA).

The American Library Association (ALA) is strongly opposed to both bills due to the potential threat to first amendment free speech rights, intellectual freedom and privacy rights.  Find out about ALA's position and more information on both SOPA and PIPA here.

Exhibit: Travelling with John Fischetti

John Fischetti, the Pulitzer-prize winning political cartoonist and syndicated cartoonist, is best known for his editorial cartoon work.

Come see a very different view of John Fischetti’s work: travel sketches from trips to France, Denmark, and New York City.

ANC 100th Anniversary Exhibit

TITLE: Freedom & Justice: The 100th Anniversary of the African National Congress

In concert with this year’s Critical Encounters theme of Rights, Radicals, and Revolutionaries, this exhibit “Freedom & Justice: The 100th Anniversary of the African National Congress” celebrates the centennial of the African National Congress (ANC), the African national liberation movement formed in 1912.

Currently the leading party in South Africa, ANC was founded as the South African Native National Congress (SANNC) in January 1912. Its mission was to increase the rights of the black South African population and a key objective of ANC today is the creation of a united, non-racial, non-sexist, and democratic society.

In 1994, after decades of resistance and frequently violent conflict, the ANC enjoyed a decisive victory when citizens voted in the country’s first national election and chose ANC candidate Nelson Mandela as President of South Africa. 
The African National Congress (ANC) exhibit contains material from the Chicago Anti-Apartheid Movement Collection housed in College Archives & Digital Collections at Columbia College Chicago.

Learn about Phi Sigma, a public-speaking group established in Chicago in 1878, the oldest, continuously running organization of its kind in Illinois.  View covers from its publication the “Voice” created and designed by its members, whose pages contain the text of talks presented on such diverse topics as art history, socialism, philosophy, journalism, idealism, and evolution.

This collection, housed in College Archives & Digital Collections at Columbia College Chicago, honors the College’s early curricula in oratory arts and speaks to Columbia’s mission and curricula today.

The exhibit is curated by Emily Sperl, an undergraduate student in Photography at Columbia College Chicago.

Give a Gift to a Child in Need: The Giving Tree @ the Library

The Center for Community Arts Partnerships (CCAP), and the Library have partnered to bring you an opportunity to give a gift to child in need. The Giving Tree will allow students, faculty, and staff from Columbia College Chicago to purchase a gift for an elementary student at Herzl Elementary School who has lost their home in the last year. 

Beginning Friday, December 1 through Wednesday, December 14, the Giving Tree will be located in the Library, across from the Circulation Desk, First Floor.  The Tree will contain names of children in need and the gift that they would like for the holiday season.  For more information, stop by the Library or contact Kim Hale at 312.369.7431 or Roland Hansen at 312.369.7431.

World Aids Day, December 1

Today, Thursday, December 1 is World AIDS Day.  World AIDS Day is held each year on this date, providing an opportunity for people throughout the world to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day and the first one was held in 1988.

Give Your Books a New Home: Books for Africa

Do you have textbooks that can't be returned for a refund?  Are you cleaning out your dorm room or office and have great books needing a new home?  Well, we can help you with that!

The Library, in partnership with Better World Books, will be sponsoring a book drive through Friday, December 16, 2011. All books received will be sent to Better World Books who will then sort and sell as many books as possible with proceeds going to our chosen literacy partner, Books for Africa.

The Columbia College Chicago Library will be closing at 7:00pm on Wednesday, November 23rd, and will reopen on Monday, November 28th at 8:00am.

Friends of the Library Signature Showcase: Jay Wolke

From 2000 to 2007, Jay Wolke photographed in the south of Italy to  capture the complexity of a region that is colloquially known as   Il mezzogiorno. What he found in this historic and often troubled  landscape was an elaborate set of physical, social,and political forces  manifested in an extraordinary tapestry of visual information. Join us as he discusses the project and signs copies of his latest book,   Architecture of Resignation, Photographs from the Mezzogiorno published  by the Center for American Places (now Columbia College Chicago  Press).  This event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will  be served. Patricia Ann McNair Book Signing: A Temple of Air

Join us as Patricia Ann McNair, Fiction Writing faculty member reads from and discusses her debut story collection, The Temple of Air on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 from 6:30-8:00pm in the Library, 3rd Floor North.

From the teenagers who witness a tragedy at a carnival to the twins who run the local ice cream parlor, each of the eleven linked stories in this collection gives readers a glimpse of life in the small town of New Hope.  Unapologetically in your face, her stories pull you close enough to dig their way into your subconscious and leave you haunted.

This program is free and open to the public, and copies of the book will be available for sale.

Banned Books Week: September 24 - October 1, 2011

This week, we celebrate Banned Books Week! Each year during the last week of September, the American Library Association (along with libraries, booksellers, publishers, and others) celebrates the freedom to read and brings to light books which have been challenged or banned throughout the country.

A yearly compilation of books which have been challenged or banned is produced by Robert P. Doyle, Executive Director of the Illinois Library Association. Among the titles for 2010-2011 include:

There are two great resources available to assist you with your technology questions, both of which can be accessed with your OASIS login.

This College resource features video tutorials on a wide array of topics, complete with screen caps and visual examples of demonstrations. Lynda is a wonderful resource for those who don't learn well through books, and can help you gain an overview of a familiar topic or learn a totally new skill. Videos lead you through the process or program step by step, teaching you the technical skills and the core concepts behind them.

Safari Tech Books
This Library resource consists of more than 12,000 online e-books, and is a great reference for those who don’t learn well through video or who need to look up specific facts. E-books are presented much the same way as paper books, complete with chapters, indices, screen caps, and diagrams. The main advantage of an e-book, however, is the ability to keyword search. You can find the specific tool, trick, skill, or shortcut to meet your needs quickly and efficiently.

Stop by the Library’s 3rd floor to view plates from this book arranged & printed by Victor H. and Ernest L. Briggs and published in 1902. The book is held in Special Collections, a unit of the Library that collects, preserves, and provides access to unique, rare, and valuable items in support of the educational, research and cultural needs of the Columbia College Chicago community.

Paper Clips & Paper Fasteners Exhibit

Keeping It Together: Paper Clips & Paper Fasteners
September 19 – December 23

Take a moment to honor the paper clip on the Library’s second floor. The exhibit includes images of distinctive fasteners from the 19th and 20th centuries, removed during the processing of archival collections. Acquaint yourself with each paper clip’s distinctive shape and discover a bit about the hardworking and largely unheralded fastener!

The exhibit was curated by Zach Michael, an undergraduate student in the Photography Department.

New Comics & Graphic Novels Database!

Underground and Independent Comics - a new resource from the Library.

Underground and Independent Comics includes more than 100,000 pages of materials, 75,000 pages of primary materials (the comics themselves), and more than 25,000 pages of materials about comics—interviews, commentary, theory, and criticism—from The Comics Journal and other secondary sources.

Browse and search by character, genre, people, publisher, series and titles.
