William Shakespeare was born (baptized April 26, 1564) and died (April 23, 1616) in the month of April.

The Big Read Screening TONIGHT: Tropico de Sangre

The Big Read Screenings conclude with Tropico de Sangre, starring Michelle Rodriguez in the role of Minerva Mirabal.  The film, directed by Juan Delancer, focuses on Minerva Mirabal and tells the true story of how she and her sisters came to represent the greatest threat to dictator Rafael Trujillo and his regime.

She, along with her sisters, Patria and Maria Teresa would eventually be murdered by Trujillo on November 25, 1960 for their underground work toward overthrowing his dictatorship.





The film came under fire in 2008 by Carlos Leiter, president of the Minerva Mirabal  Foundation for using Rodriguez due to her past legal troubles and illegal use of the Mirabal name.  Find out what happened here.

Big Read Film Screenings

As part of The Big Read, Columbia College Chicago will be sponsoring several film screenings related to the In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez.  In the Time of the Butterflies transports us to the Dominican Republic in the mid-twentieth century when the country struggled under the brutal dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. A work of historical fiction, the novel honors the lives of Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa Mirabal, who became icons of freedom and women's rights when they were assassinated in the autumn of 1960 for their role in the underground movement against Trujillo's regime.

There will be several screenings of the "In the Time of the Butterflies," the feature motion picture, starring Salma Hayek, Lumi Cavazos, Marc Anthony and Edward James Olmos.

We are pleased to welcome author, artist, and Columbia faculty, Audrey Niffenegger to the Library as part of the Friends of the Library Signature Showcase. Audrey will talk about her experiences as both a writer and visual artist. She will be joined by Ron Falzone, filmmaker and a faculty member in the Film and Video department at Columbia College Chicago.

Current, new and renewing Friends of the Library are invited to a private reception with Ms. Niffenegger beginning at 5 pm. Individuals who join or renew their memberships to the Friends of the Library at the $100 Sustaining Friend level and above will receive a complimentary signed copy of Ms. Niffenegger’s new book, Her Fearful Symmetry.

Tuya de hun shi (Tuya's Marriage), 2005, 96 min., Chinese with English subtitles.
After suffering a back injury working on the family farm, Tuya decides to get a divorce and find a new husband who will take care of her children, land, and disabled first husband—a search that proves to be much harder than she had anticipated.



Ni qiu ye shi yu (Loach is fish too), 2005, 100 min., Chinese with English subtitles.
Two migrant workers from the countryside (one the mother of two children) who share the same name "Ni Qiu" - meaning loach in Chinese - try to subsist as laborers in Beijing.

A young woman rents a room from an elderly woman who is mean to her. She decides to say in the room after deciding the elderly woman needs her.


Shi Jie (The World), 2004, 96 min., Chinese with English subtitles.
On the outskirts of Beijing lies an amusement park featuring scaled-down models of world famous landmarks. Shi Jie follows the daily lives of staff members Taxo and Taisheng as they navigate their romance through The World.
