Will it Ever End?

Construction, that is. We've been enjoying a couple of summer construction projects on and around Columbia's campus, and wanted to share the love!

Those of us who regularly cross Congress Parkway have been suffering through a project begun in 2010 to make the Parkway more pedestrian-friendly. The construction has of course made things quite a bit less pedestrian-friendly, but we may be turning a corner. Major work has ceased, and it looks like we are just awaiting some decorative metal trellises (illustrated above) to complete the friendlier look.

As the project is slated for completion in "late 2012", we look forward to an easier and more aesthetically pleasing crossing soon. For more information, check out this glossy brochure from the City and slideshow about the Congress Parkway Improvement Project.

An interesting campus project is centered on the front of the 618 S. Michigan building: a facelift to take its look back to the past and forward to the future at the same time. The late '50s metal-and-blue-rectangular structure has been removed, and the underlayer of bricks is being repaired. Once the brickwork is finished, a glass wall will be installed on the front of the building that features a "ghost image" of its original 1913 terra cotta façade.

For the time being, the building looks like it's on life support, with windows removed, dessicated masonry on display, and a scaffold to end all scaffolds gracing its front. Here's hoping the finished product provides that blast from the past that takes us back to the future. 1. "Espadrilles are normally casual flat, but sometimes high heeled shoes originating from the Pyrenees. They usually have a canvas or cotton fabric upper and a flexible sole made of rope or rubber material molded to look like rope. The jute rope sole is the defining characteristic of an espadrille; the uppers vary widely in style.
   
   "The term espadrille is French and derives from the Occitan & Catalan name for the shoes, espardenya, which derives from espart, the Occitan/Catalan name for esparto, a tough, wiry Mediterranean grass used in making rope. Espadrilles have been made in Pyrenean Occitan a and Catalonia since the 14th century at least and there are shops in the Basque country still in existence that have been making espadrilles for over a century. Traditional espadrilles have a canvas upper with the toe and vamp cut in one piece, and seamed to the rope sole at the sides. Often they would have laces at the throat that would be wrapped around the ankle to hold the shoes securely in place. Traditional espadrilles are worn by both men and women."

Ray Bradbury, 1920-2012

Ray Bradbury, science fiction author of classic books such as Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles, has died at 91.  In 2009 Columbia College Chicago awarded Ray Bradbury with an honorary degree.
Columbia College faculty member and Bradbury biographer, Sam Weller spoke at the commencement ceremony and introduced a video from Ray Bradbury.

Summer Movies in the Collection

You may be excited to see this year's summer blockbusters but there are plenty of movies about summer to keep you busy too!

CARLI member library closures due to NATO

 


Due to security concerns surrounding the NATO Summit, the following CARLI member institutions in the Chicago downtown/loop area will be closed Friday May 18 - Monday May 21.  They include:

Other institutions may decide to close at the last minute, so you are advised to plan/call ahead if you have research needs during this time period. A list of CARLI member institutions with contact information can be found here.

Harold Washington Library Center is scheduled to be open during that time, although street closures in the area will be in effect.

Summer transportation

Without your U-Pass, you might feel like you're stranded in your apartment this summer. Hopefully with a few tools we can remedy that situation.

1. Use the CTA's many resources.
The website itself, http://www.transitchicago.com/, is completely full of helpful advice including information on closures/reroutes and links to their apps. Two things I use regularly on my smartphone- train tracker, I just have it bookmarked on my phone, (http://www.transitchicago.com/traintracker/) but you could use an app instead, and bus tracker, which I use both the web and text versions (http://www.ctabustracker.com/bustime/home.jsp.)





2.Car sharing: i-Go/Zip cars
i-go (http://www.igocars.org/) cars are parked throughout the city and great if you just need to make a few random day trips. Columbia even participates in their University and College program, when you sign up you can get a discount: http://www.igocars.org/!
Zipcar (http://www.zipcar.com/) is a similar car sharing business and they also have a University discount program: http://www.zipcar.com/universities/.



3. Bike!
Chicago is a very bike friendly city, get you wheels tuned up, grab a helmet and check out some of these resources. Google will map the best route for you to take on your bike if you need some help with directions. For example, I mapped a route from Columbia College to Wrigley field, and here is a link to the suggested route: http://g.co/maps/nuwwe. The CTA is also very bike friendly and if you need to you can bring you bike on a train during certain hours, or on a bus at any time (http://www.transitchicago.com/bikeandride/). The chainlink is a Chicago-specific bike community with tons of info about biking in Chicago, if you sign up, their weekly email updates are great to keep an eye out for Chicagoland bike tours and events (http://www.thechainlink.org/). And last but not least, Chicago's Bike to Work Week takes place June 11-15, but the event is kicked off on June 9th. Kindle Lending Library

What do The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, The Habits of Highly Effective People and Fast Food Nation have in common?  They are all available for you to borrow for free at the Kindle Owner's Lending Library!

What you need

To borrow ebooks from the Kindle Owner's Lending Library you need to own some type of Kindle device and you must be an eligible Prime member (paid Amazon Prime, paid Amazon Student).  Kindle owners can now borrow ebooks from the Lending Library and place them directly onto their registered Kindle Device.

Reading your eBook

The borrowed eBook must be read on a Kindle device - you will not be able to read the ebook on your iPad, iPhone, Android, etc.   There are no "due dates" for your borrowed ebook - you are allowed to keep the ebook as long as you wish.  However, you can only borrow one book at a time and only borrow one free book per month. 


Extras
Bookmarks, notes and highlights are all available through the Lending Library and will be saved to your Amazon.com account.  if you ever borrow or puchase the ebook in the future all of the notes and highlights will be available for you.

How Do I Pay Library Fines?

Are library fines preventing you from graduating?  You can pay them online:

1. In the Services tab on the Library website, click How much do I owe?
2. Enter your Library Borrower ID.  This is the 11-digit number on the back of your Columbia ID card.  It starts with 22711...
3. Enter your last name and Login.
4. Your fines will be listed.
5. Back on the Services tab, click Pay Fines.
6. Login with your Oasis number.  Pay with an eCheck or Credit Card.

If you need to discuss your fines with a Library staff member, call Access Services at (312) 369-7152.

Free coffee during finals!

Monday through Thursday the week of finals grab a free cup of coffee from the first floor of the Library! Starting at 5pm each evening and brewing until 8pm, get that jolt of caffeine you need to make it through your last study session or paper.We are here to help you make it through that last crazy week of the semester.

TED-ED a new Online Learning Platform

TED, the non-profit organization famous for "Ideas Worth Spreading,"  launched a new online learning platform today as part of its new  TED-Ed education initiative (http://ed.ted.com).

Back in March, TED launched a YouTube Channel channel dedicated to educational videos (http://www.youtube.com/user/TEDEducation).

The new education platform launched today, TED-Ed features a suite of tools that allow teachers to create their own lessons based on TED videos or any video found on YouTube.  

Teachers can use the pre-made lessons created by TED, customize the TED lessons for their own classes or create new lessons using TED videos or videos found on YouTube.  The TED created videos come with supplementary resources including multiple-choice questions, open-answer questions, and links to more information about the subject.  Teachers can "flip" or customize the TED-Ed lessons to suit their particular curricular needs.  If a teacher "flips" a lesson or creates their own lesson from a TED or YouTube video, the new lesson is given its own private web page that can be distributed to students.  Individual student progress can then be tracked as they complete the assignments.

"The new website is all about what teachers and students can do with those videos," says TED-Ed's Logan Smalley.  "The goal of TED-Ed is for each great lesson to reach and motivate as many learners as possible.  The new website goes a step further, allowing any teacher to tailor video content, create unique lesson plans, and monitor students' progress.   By putting this new technology to use, we hope to maximize time in class and give teachers an exciting tool for customizing  - and encouraging - learning."

Finals Fridays begin this week!

The Library is once again staying open late on Friday nights! This week is the first of Finals Fridays when the Library will be staying open until 8pm. The last three Fridays of the semester (4/20, 4/27, and 5/4) we will be open from 8:00am to 8:00pm. Reserve textbooks and computers are always accessible for use and Librarians will be available to help with any research questions. • Select the video you want to use
• Click on the Embed/Link option

 

• Copy the PERMALINK and past it into your syllabus or Moodle class

How Do I Print?

To print (and photocopy!) in the Library you need a Columbia Campus ID card, with Columbia Cash on it.

With your ID and Columbia Cash, you can print in the Library and campus computer labs. Printing costs $.10 / page for black and white, $.50 / page for color. Black and white printers/copiers are on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors. The color printer is on the 1st floor, the color copier on the 4th floor.

To print with coins or bills, purchase a GoPrint/OmniPrint card from the machine on the 1st floor.

NATO will be holding its 25th summit in President Obama’s hometown of Chicago, United States, on 20-21 May 2012. It will deliver on decisions that were taken at the Lisbon Summit in November 2010, driving forward key Alliance policies and reaffirming the transatlantic link.

  A principal architect behind the NATO enlargement and the alliance’s 2010 Strategic Concept, Secretary Madeleine Albright now serves as co-chair of the host committee for the 2012 Chicago NATO summit. She joins The Chicago Council to reflect on the historic events featured in her latest memoir and to discuss the key lessons from her family’s harrowing flight from Prague in the prelude to World War II.

  The 14th Annual Chicago’s Kids and Kites Day will be linked to NATO…a fun-filled day to celebrate the joys of being a kid. From running around outdoors, flying FREE paper kites and enjoying family-focused programming including face painting, crafts, balloon artists and more.
  
  NATO is providing 5,000 kite kits for children as well as pictures of flags and fun facts about representative countries to help inspire children as they decorate their kites. In addition, the festival will also feature a workshop on the history and tradition of Afghan fighter kites. Also, the Big Kite Candy Drop will take place during the afternoon, weather permitting.
