The fall 2010 Alumni exhibition, Physicality & Virtuality, takes a look at Columbia College Chicago alumni work exploring the differences and overlap between the physical and the virtual in their art practices.

Friends of Libraries Week!

Bill of Rights Vote

This year, as part of Columbia College's Constitution Day celebration, Columbia students voted for their favorite constitutional amendment. They threw overwhelming support (43% of the vote) to the First Amendment, which reads: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Other winners were the Fourteenth Amendment guaranteeing civil rights (16%); the Nineteen Amendment granting voting rights for women (16%) and the Twenty-first Amendment repealing prohibition (12%). The remaining votes were divided nearly equally between the Second Amendment (the right to bear arms), the Thirteenth Amendment (the abolition of slavery), the Tenth Amendment (states’ rights) and the Eighteenth Amendment (prohibition of liquor).

Thank you to everyone who voted. See you next year at September 17th, when we once again celebrate the United States Constitution.

Beyond the Panel: Chicago Women in Comics, Wed, Sept 29th, 6-8pm

Join the Columbia College Chicago Comics Club and the Library as three of Chicago's finest comic creators come together to share and discuss their work in the comic arts.

The panel will be held on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 from 6:00-8:00pm in the Columbia College Chicago Library, 624 S. Michigan Ave., 3rd Floor North. This panel is free and open to the public.

C. Spike Trotman, cartoonist of the web comic, Templar, AZ; Jill Thompson whose work ranges from the acclaimed adult series, The Sandman to the children's comic, Magic Trixie; and renaissance woman Audrey Niffenegger, creator of the new graphic novel, The Night Bookmobile. There will be an opportunity to purchase books by the artists at the end of the presentation.

Banned Books Week @ the Library, Sept 25 through Oct 2

Each year, the American Library Association promotes Banned Books Week, a week-long event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. This year, Banned Books week is September 25 through October 2.

Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.

Stop by the Library during Banned Books Week and pick up bookmarks and buttons showing your support of the freedom to read. Quantities are limited, so come early! Check out our display near the Library entrance to see a selection of books which have been challenged or banned in libraries-you might just be surprised!

Banned Books Week Read Out!

Join the American Library Association as they celebrate Banned Books Week by sponsoring a Read-Out on Saturday, September 25, 2010, from noon to 2:00 PM, in historic Bughouse Square (Washington Square Park), 901 N. Clark St., Chicago.

The Read-Out is an annual event to bring attention to books that have been banned and challenged in the United States. ALA President Roberta Stevens will welcome critically acclaimed and censored young adult author, Chris Crutcher, host of the event. Admission is FREE.

Some of the authors featured on the ten most frequently challenged books of 2009 will read from their work and share their experiences as targets of censors. The readings begin at noon and will be followed by book signings by all the authors in attendance from 2:00 to 3:00 PM.

A limited number of books will be given away for free to participating audience members.

The Art in the Library program at Columbia College Chicago provides an open, supportive and inviting setting to showcase the talent and creativity of our own community of artists. Since its inception in 2002, Art in the Library has offered library visitors the opportunity to experience the rich cultural diversity and progressive attitudes which thrive in the Columbia environment.

Presenting the work of Columbia College Chicago students, faculty, staff and alumni, the Art in the Library program exhibits works in all forms of visual arts, including sculpture, painting, drawings, and paper and book arts. Exhibitions by different artists are shown quarterly on a rotating basis.

The Art in the Library Committee welcomes all Columbia College Chicago artists to submit work for consideration.

Join us as Heather McElhatton reads from her latest book, A Million Little Mistakes: Choose Your Own Adventure Book for Adults. Ms. McElhatton is an independent producer for Public Radio International and her commentaries and stories have been heard nationally on This American Life, Marketplace, Weekend America, Sound Money and The Savvy Traveler. Her previous work includes: Pretty Little Mistakes, Jennifer Johnson is Sick of Being Single and a several short stories including “Red Shoes” which was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2001. She also produced the radio literary series, Talking Volumes.

The Library is one of the galleries featured in ARTcrawl

The Columbia College Chicago Library is one of 8 galleries featured in the 2010 ArtCrawl on the Columbia campus. ArtCrawl occurs Thursday, September 9, 2010 from 5:00-8:00pm and features 8 art exhibitions, 3 live music stages and a dance party. This program is free and open to the public.

Our current exhibit, “Images of Home”, is part of a Critical Encounter café society initiative to create dialogue around the images we create and see based on this years theme, “Image and Implication”. The photographs in the exhibit were taken by new Columbia students, each representing their idea of “home”. This exhibit runs through September 9th.

All required textbooks *over $40 are purchased and placed on reserve in the Columbia College Chicago Library.

Reserve books are available for short-term check-out at the first floor Circulation Desk. They may be used in the library only. We ask that you return reserve items to the desk as soon as you have completed your assignment. An OASIS ID is required for check-out.

Sign Up for Constitution Day Read-out

Do you like to read out loud? Do you LOVE the United States Constitution?

Help Columbia College Chicago proclaim Constitution Day 2010. Sign up to be part of at the XIVth Amendment Read-out.

What: Reading the XIVth Amendment and excerpts of landmark decisions based on it.
When: The Read-out will take place on September 17, between 11am and 2pm.
Where: Conaway Center, 1104 S. Wabash Ave.

How: Readers will read for 10 minutes each. To sign up for a time slot, contact Riva Feshbach, Outreach Librarian at rfeshbach@colum.edu or call 312-369-3295.

Why: Why is Columbia College Chicago holding a Constitution Day Read-out? It is required by law that educational organizations receiving federal funding must celebrate Constitution Day.

Jan Chindlund, 2010 Rose Vormelker Award Recipient

Jan Chindlund, library director of Columbia College Chicago, is the 2010 recipient of the SLA Rose L. Vormelker Award. Chindlund was honored for mentoring, inspiring, and guiding information professionals through her work at Columbia College Chicago, McDonald’s Corporation, and the Special Library Association’s (SLA) Illinois Chapter and the SLA Business & Finance (B&F) Division.

The Vormelker Award is presented to an SLA member for exceptional service to the profession through education and mentoring of students and working professionals. The SLA Awards Committee cited Chindlund’s dedication to mentoring and inspiring SLA members, as well as her volunteer work at all levels of the association during more than 23 years of membership.

6th Annual Printers' Ball - Friday, July 30th 6-11pm at 1104 S. Wabash

Founded by Poetry six years ago, Printers' Ball is an annual celebration of print culture, showcasing thousands of magazines, books, broadsides, and other print and paper media from around the world. The Ball, hosted for the second year by Columbia College Chicago, will also include book- and papermaking demonstrations, screenings, readings, live music, and fabulous costumes. For the first time, and as part of this year's theme - Print <3 Digital - Printers' Ball will feature a group of digital installations.

Free and open to the public.

Print <3 Digital is set for Friday, July 30th from 6-11pm in the 1104 South Wabash Building.

All literary endeavors - printed, electronic, and/or performative - are welcome to participate. Faculty, staff, and students with ideas, email Mairead Case at mcase@colum.edu to get connected.

Third Annual Library Haiku Contest Winner--Annie Jo Kjar

For the last three years, the Columbia College Chicago Library, with the support of the Office of Student Affairs, has sponsored its annual Haiku Contest as part of Manifest. Each year has specific themes and all students are invited to submit haiku based on those themes. For 2010, they are: libraries, knowledge, learning, books, literacy and reading.
