Come view selected political cartoons and illustrations from the Chicago Journalists Association collection, most on display for the first time in nearly thirty years. Chicago Journalists Association is a non-profit organization of experienced print and electronic journalists in the Chicago area that was founded during the Chicago World’s Fair.

During the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893, Chicago journalists met while covering the event. Forty years later, on August 12, 1933, at the second Chicago World Fair, the Century of Progress, a reunion of the press veterans of 1893 was held, a board was formed, and the organization began to meet once a year.

In 1939, Joseph C. Davis, a sportswriter, led the promotion of the Chicago Press Veterans Association and widened its membership base. This organization of professional journalists held its first annual dinner in December 1939 and the association was incorporated in 1942.
In 2011, the Chicago Journalists Association donated the collection to College Archives and Digital Collections at Columbia College Chicago for curricular support and research use.

Where's my Wikipedia? Many sites go dark

Today, a number of websites (including Wikipedia) are going "dark" for 24 hours in protest of two upcoming Congressional bills, the "Stop Online Privacy Act" (SOPA) and "Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act of 2011" (PIPA).

The American Library Association (ALA) is strongly opposed to both bills due to the potential threat to first amendment free speech rights, intellectual freedom and privacy rights. Find out about ALA's position and more information on both SOPA and PIPA here.

John Fischetti, the Pulitzer-prize winning political cartoonist and syndicated cartoonist, is best known for his editorial cartoon work.

ANC 100th Anniversary Exhibit

In concert with this year’s Critical Encounters theme of Rights, Radicals, and Revolutionaries, this exhibit “Freedom & Justice: The 100th Anniversary of the African National Congress” celebrates the centennial of the African National Congress (ANC), the African national liberation movement formed in 1912.

Currently the leading party in South Africa, ANC was founded as the South African Native National Congress (SANNC) in January 1912. Its mission was to increase the rights of the black South African population and a key objective of ANC today is the creation of a united, non-racial, non-sexist, and democratic society.

In 1994, after decades of resistance and frequently violent conflict, the ANC enjoyed a decisive victory when citizens voted in the country’s first national election and chose ANC candidate Nelson Mandela as President of South Africa.
The African National Congress (ANC) exhibit contains material from the Chicago Anti-Apartheid Movement Collection housed in College Archives & Digital Collections at Columbia College Chicago.

Phi Sigma: The Voice Exhibit

Learn about Phi Sigma, a public-speaking group established in Chicago in 1878, the oldest, continuously running organization of its kind in Illinois. View covers from its publication the “Voice” created and designed by its members, whose pages contain the text of talks presented on such diverse topics as art history, socialism, philosophy, journalism, idealism, and evolution.

This collection, housed in College Archives & Digital Collections at Columbia College Chicago, honors the College’s early curricula in oratory arts and speaks to Columbia’s mission and curricula today.

The exhibit is curated by Emily Sperl, an undergraduate student in Photography at Columbia College Chicago.

TheCenter for Community Arts Partnerships (CCAP),and the Library have partnered to bring you an opportunity to give a gift tochild in need. The Giving Tree will allow students, faculty, and staff fromColumbia College Chicago to purchase a gift for an elementary student at HerzlElementary School who has lost their home in the last year.

Beginning Friday, December 1 through Wednesday, December 14, the Giving Tree will be located in the Library, across from the Circulation Desk, First Floor. The Tree will contain names of children in need and the gift that they would like for theholiday season. World AIDS Day is held each year on this date, providing an opportunity for people throughout the world to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. Patricia Ann McNair Book Signing: A Temple of Air

From the teenagers who witness a tragedy at a carnival to the twins who run the local ice cream parlor, each of the eleven linked stories in this collection gives readers a glimpse of life in the small town of New Hope. Unapologetically in your face, her stories pull you close enough to dig their way into your subconscious and leave you haunted.

This program is free and open to the public, and copies of the book will be available for sale.

This week, we celebrate Banned Books Week! Each year during the last week of September, the American Library Association (along with libraries, booksellers, publishers, and others) celebrates the freedom to read and brings to light books which have been challenged or banned throughout the country.

This College resource features video tutorials on a wide array of topics, complete with screen caps and visual examples of demonstrations. Lynda is a wonderful resource for those who don't learn well through books, and can help you gain an overview of a familiar topic or learn a totally new skill. Videos lead you through the process or program step by step, teaching you the technical skills and the core concepts behind them.

Safari Tech Books
This Library resource consists of more than 12,000 online e-books, and is a great reference for those who don’t learn well through video or who need to look up specific facts. E-books are presented much the same way as paper books, complete with chapters, indices, screen caps, and diagrams. The main advantage of an e-book, however, is the ability to keyword search. You can find the specific tool, trick, skill, or shortcut to meet your needs quickly and efficiently.

Asian Fashion and Cosplay Exhibit

In 2008, students participated in a summer study tour in Tokyo, Japan. The tour description read:

Love Harajuku street fashion? Big fan of manga, anime, and Japanese pop culture? Interested in Japanese art, design, new media and its history? Join us for a study tour to Tokyo, the cultural capital of Asia where refined traditions, Zen philosophy and tranquil aesthetic coexist with the exaggerated cuteness of animate subculture and imported global influences.

The street fashion images displayed in the Library, 3rd floor, east contain highlights from an exhibit co-created by the Center for Asian Arts and Media at Columbia College Chicago.
The exhibit runs through December 23, 2011.

Veterans Administration Exhibit

Veterans Administration Research and Guidance Center at Columbia College Exhibit

After World War II, Columbia College was an important education center for the Veteran Administration. The GI Bill had far reaching effects at the College that still resonate today. The display features material from the time period, 1945 to 1956, including information about students, disciplines introduced, and alumnae who attended Columbia on the GI Bill, including one of our current trustees. The exhibit is in the Library, 2nd floor west and runs from August 10 until December 23, 2011.

Archie Lieberman Black Star Exhibit

The Archie Lieberman Black Star exhibition features a selection of Lieberman’s photographs during his time with Black Star, a photographic agency offering photojournalism and stock photography services. It is an important supplier of photographs to Life and other magazines. Culled from thousands of negatives, most of the photographs shown in the exhibit were not chosen for their original publications. Despite the variety of content, these striking photographs reveal a sense of humor and an interest in the unusual. Lieberman worked with Black Star for nearly a decade.

The Archie Lieberman Black Star exhibition is part of the Archie Lieberman collection, a generous gift from the Lieberman family to the Archives and Digital Collections at Columbia College Chicago. Lieberman taught photography at Columbia College during the 1960s. Curated by Thatiana Oliveira, a graduate student in Photography at Columbia College Chicago, the exhibit runs through September 30, 2011. An exhibit reception will be held Tuesday September 13, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Library, 3 North.

Chicago History Portal Project

Columbia College Chicago is pleased to announce its participation in an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded project to plan a portal to Chicago-focused historical collections in 14 area museums, universities, libraries, and other cultural institutions that make up the Chicago Collections Consortium (CCC). Mellon recently awarded $61,000 to the University of Illinois Board of Trustees on behalf of the University of Illinois at Chicago Library who is leading the effort.

The Chicago Collections Consortium, when complete, will provide a web portal to member collections through one single database. Member institutions include: University of Illinois at Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Library, Newberry Library and the Chicago History Museum.

Columbia College Chicago Library staff members, Kyle Henke and Kerri Willette will serve on two portal working groups to evaluate content, technology needs, functional requirements and implementation approaches. College Archivist, Heidi Marshall and Center for Black Music Head Librarian and Archivist, Suzanne Flandreau are also active participants in the project. Library featured in recent article

The Columbia College Chicago Library, is featured in an article about academic library marketing. The article, " Marketing Comes to Campus: Academic Libraries Learn to Blow Their Own Horns" appears in the August 2011 issue of ILA Reporter. Illinois State University is also featured.

The author, Elizabeth Neill, is currently a librarian at the Bellwood Public Library. She served as a volunteer in the Library for several weeks this spring due to her interest in library marketing, and especially our work at Columbia College Chicago. The article can be accessed here, and begins on page 4.

VIDEO: The Language of War Panel

What language do we use to talk about war? How does this language affect our understanding of war and impact those who fight? On April 13 the Library hosted “The Language of War”, a panel discussion that included combat veterans and anti-war activists exploring these questions as part of The Big Read, featuring Tim O’Brien’s Vietnam War classic The Things They Carried.

The panelists were Pat Hunt, from the Chicago chapter of CodePink, Vietnam War combat veteran Barry Romo, Iraq War combat veteran Anthony Wagner, and Louis Silverstein, Distinguished Professor of Humanities at Columbia College Chicago as moderator and panelist. Some highlights:

Located on the first floor of the Library, the exhibit showcases Fischetti’s political cartoons and sketches capturing his take on the Vietnam War. Held in conjunction with the Library’s Big Read programming for the book The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien and the College’s annual John Fischetti Editorial Cartoon Competition, the exhibit focuses on the US involvement in Vietnam from 1960 to 1975 and the various reactions to it in American culture.

Curated by Dominican University Library Science student, Jerica Copeny, and College Archives & Digital Collections staff member, Kris Lipkowski, the exhibit runs from March 30 through May 16, 2011.

15th Annual Story Week - March 13-18

From Sunday, March 13 through Friday, March 18, the Columbia College Chicago Fiction Writing Department presents its 15th Annual Story Week Festival of Writers: Class Acts.

This year's theme will spark discussion among Story Week participants about how issues of class manifest themselves in creative works and the rapidly changing world of publishing. It also reflects the high quality of writing from this year's featured guests.

As it has for the last 15 years, Story Week 2011 will offer six days jam-packed with readings, conversations with authors, panels, performances, and book signings at venues throughout Chicago—all free and open to the public. It is co-sponsored in part by the Chicago Public Library and Metro.

Story Week will once again present a diverse group of headliners who will read from and discuss their works. They are: Scottish-born Irvine Welsh, who grabbed the world's attention with his daring working-class fiction novel Trainspotting; Chicago-born Jennifer Egan, whose most recent book, A Visit from the Goon Squad, was named one of the top 10 books of 2010 by the New York Times; and Karen Tei Yamashita, National Book Award finalist and author of I Hotel, about the Yellow Power movement in 1970s San Francisco. Also lighting up the Story Week stage is Columbia College Chicago professor Audrey Niffenegger, acclaimed author of The Time Traveler's Wife, Her Fearful Symmetry, and the serialized graphic novel The Night Bookmobile. Goodman Theatre playwrights Regina Taylor (The Trinity River Plays) and Tanya Saracho (El Nogalar) will explore the collaborative nature of storytelling and the stage.

A Course in Basic Copyright Principles

Whenever you create new artwork or scholarship, or use the work of others, copyright law touches you. If you would like to learn about the intersections of copyright law and creative practice, please consider enrolling in Basic Copyright Principles.

This noncredit course is designed especially for faculty, and will meet February 2 through 4, 2011. It is online in Moodle, so you can work at your own pace, in your own space. Copyright Basics includes brief readings and activities intended to introduce you to copyright law and related resources.

Topics include:

• What copyright protects

• Who owns copyright

• The duration of copyright protection

• The rights included in copyright

• Exceptions to copyright, with a focus on fair use

• How to seek permission to use a work protected by copyright

• The Creative Commons as an alternative to copyright protection

• Services provided by the Columbia College Library that help you to comply with copyright law

David Plowden is the author of more than twenty photography books, including: Bridges: The Spans of North America, Vanishing Point: Fifty Years of Photography, and A Handful of Dust: Disappearing America. This year, as part of Columbia College's Constitution Day celebration, Columbia students voted for their favorite constitutional amendment. They threw overwhelming support (43% of the vote) to the First Amendment, which reads: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Other winners were the Fourteenth Amendment guaranteeing civil rights (16%); the Nineteen Amendment granting voting rights for women (16%) and the Twenty-first Amendment repealing prohibition (12%). The remaining votes were divided nearly equally between the Second Amendment (the right to bear arms), the Thirteenth Amendment (the abolition of slavery), the Tenth Amendment (states’ rights) and the Eighteenth Amendment (prohibition of liquor).

Thank you to everyone who voted. See you next year at September 17th, when we once again celebrate the United States Constitution.

Each year, the American Library Association promotes Banned Books Week, a week-long event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. This year, Banned Books week is September 25 through October 2.

Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.

Join the American Library Association as they celebrate Banned Books Week by sponsoring a Read-Out on Saturday, September 25, 2010, from noon to 2:00 PM, in historic Bughouse Square (Washington Square Park), 901 N. Clark St., Chicago.

The Read-Out is an annual event to bring attention to books that have been banned and challenged in the United States. ALA President Roberta Stevens will welcome critically acclaimed and censored young adult author, Chris Crutcher, host of the event. Admission is FREE.

Some of the authors featured on the ten most frequently challenged books of 2009 will read from their work and share their experiences as targets of censors. The readings begin at noon and will be followed by book signings by all the authors in attendance from 2:00 to 3:00 PM.

A limited number of books will be given away for free to participating audience members.

Our current exhibit, “Images of Home”, is part of a Critical Encounter café society initiative to create dialogue around the images we create and see based on this years theme, “Image and Implication”. Jan Chindlund, 2010 Rose Vormelker Award Recipient

Jan Chindlund, library director of Columbia College Chicago, is the 2010 recipient of the SLA Rose L. Vormelker Award. Chindlund was honored for mentoring, inspiring, and guiding information professionals through her work at Columbia College Chicago, McDonald’s Corporation, and the Special Library Association’s (SLA) Illinois Chapter and the SLA Business & Finance (B&F) Division.

The Vormelker Award is presented to an SLA member for exceptional service to the profession through education and mentoring of students and working professionals. The SLA Awards Committee cited Chindlund’s dedication to mentoring and inspiring SLA members, as well as her volunteer work at all levels of the association during more than 23 years of membership.

Founded by Poetry six years ago, Printers' Ball is an annual celebration of print culture, showcasing thousands of magazines, books, broadsides, and other print and paper media from around the world. The Ball, hosted for the second year by Columbia College Chicago, will also include book- and papermaking demonstrations, screenings, readings, live music, and fabulous costumes. For the first time, and as part of this year's theme - Print <3 Digital - Printers' Ball will feature a group of digital installations.

Free and open to the public.

Print <3 Digital is set for Friday, July 30th from 6-11pm in the 1104 South Wabash Building.

Each year has specific themes and all students are invited to submit haiku based on those themes. For 2010, they are: libraries, knowledge, learning, books, literacy and reading.

Columbia College Chicago Library will be one of many libraries around the country participating in “An Evening with Neil Gaiman” sponsored by the American Library Association’ Campaign for America’s Libraries and the Jessamine County (Ky.) Public Library. Neil Gaiman is also this year’s Honorary Chair of National Library Week. He won the 2009 Newbery Medal for his work, “The Graveyard Book.”

This presentation will feature a live interview via streaming video of Mr. Gaiman discussing his life-long love of libraries and the role they play in a democratic society by supporting intellectual freedom. Genre Bending: The Faces of Fiction

The Columbia College Chicago Fiction Writing Department presents its 14th Annual Story Week Festival of Writers from Sunday, March 14, through Friday, March 20. Affectionately known as the “Lollapalooza of literary events,” Story Week 2010 offers a feast of free readings, conversations with authors, panels, performances, and book signings at venues across the city. Co-sponsored in part by the Chicago Public Library and Metro, this program is made possible in part by a grant from the ILLINOIS ARTS COUNCIL, a state agency.

Our theme for 2010, Genre Bending: The Faces of Fiction, reflects the increasingly porous boundaries between literary and genre fiction. Whether based in truth or pure fiction, this year’s featured authors use myriad fictional forms to shed light on the struggles, trials, and triumphs of the human race.

We are pleased to present literary icon Joyce Carol Oates, who has penned more than a hundred books in every genre imaginable, including Oprah Book Club selection We Were the Mulvaneys, National Book Award finalists Blonde and The Gravedigger’s Daughter, New York Times best seller The Falls, and her latest suspense thriller, A Fair Maiden. Other headliners include award-winning authors Aleksandar Hemon, Love and Obstacles; Bonnie Jo Campbell, American Salvage; Achy Obejas, Ruins; David Morrell, The Shimmer; Maggie Estep, Alice Fantastic; Australian writer John Dale, Leaving Suzie Pye; and local crime novelist Marcus Sakey, The Amateurs. We will also present many other distinguished writers, panelists, artists, and performers throughout this jam-packed week.

Highlights. The Sunday-night kick-off is 2nd Story at Martyrs’—a high-energy show of stories and music. On Monday, we will offer two events featuring Joyce Carol Oates at the Harold Washington Library. Tuesday evening, we’ll present Genres from Afar with readings/conversations with Aleksandar Hemon, Achy Obejas, and John Dale. On Wednesday, we’ll focus on our Genre-Bending theme with an afternoon panel hosted by Joe Meno, The Great Perhaps, and evening readings by Mort Castle, On Writing Horror, Maggie Estep, and David Morrell. Two of Story Week’s most popular events take place on Thursday—a morning publishing panel hosted by Booklist Associate Editor and Chicago Public Radio Book Critic Donna Seaman at the Harold Washington Library, and in the evening, Story Week’s celebratory Literary Rock & Roll at the Metro, featuring readings by Aleksandar Hemon, Bonnie Jo Campbell, and Marcus Sakey, followed by a rousing performance from Vermont’s Bread & Puppet Theater and DJ music from Joe Shanahan and Don De Grazia, American Skin. On Friday night at Smart Bar, the Chicago Tribune’s Rick Kogan hosts a Story Showcase of Columbia College Chicago Fiction Writing Department authors with new books.

Columbia College Chicago Office of Alumni Relations & the Columbia Library call for submissions for the new, twice yearly, alumni exhibition in the Library.

You study, you exhibit, you celebrate, you graduate, you Manifest. Now, you are looking for ways to stay involved with the virbrant arts community that is Columbia College Chicago.

The Office of Alumni Relations is partnering with the Library to offer Columbia Alumni an opportunity to exhibit their original work in a twice yearly, juried exhibition in the Library.

The first exhibition, scheduled for spring 2010, “Greater Than 16x20; Less Than 4x5”, will explore the idea of really big and really small works.

The d.i.y. panel discussion series at the Columbia College Chicago Library focuses on ‘do it yourself’ fields, in which many from the Columbia community are active.

Each session brings together three independent artists who share their work experience and discuss the evolution of and inspiration for their art, ingredients for success, and advice for up-and-coming artists.

Podcasts will be available for most sessions.

Learn how to how to protect your work so it’s there when you need it -- tomorrow or five years from tomorrow. Focusing on digital, fine art, and physical material formats, the panelists will address long-term care and will answer questions from the audience.

Panelists:

Heidi Marshall: Head of College Archives & Digital Collections at Columbia College Chicago. Her work focuses on preserving the history and activities of the College in formats ranging from century-old documents to HD video. Hired at Columbia to establish its archives in 2005, she holds a MS in Library Science and a MA in American History from Simmons College, Boston and is active in the Society of American Archivists, the Chicago Area Archivists, concentrating on electronic records and digital preservation.

Laura Moeller: a conservator at Graphic Conservation company since 2006 and Columbia alumnus with a BFA in Photography. Laura has a background in printmaking, bookbinding and letterpress arts as well as art history and is an active member of the American Institute for Conservation, Chicago Area Conservation Group and the arts scene. Laura bridges the gap between expectations of artists and the reality of future conservation needs based on chosen materials.

Dr. Michael J. Welsh: an Associate Professor of Chemistry in the Science and Mathematics Department at Columbia College Chicago. He earned a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Illinois Champaign Urbana and a B.S. in Chemistry from Bradley University, Peoria Illinois. His research interests include new teaching methods, chemical demonstrations, and promoting student understanding of the role chemistry plays in the everyday life of the liberal arts student, and in particular the role chemistry plays in the production and conservation of art and cultural artifacts. Over the past ten years, he has developed and taught a course taught at Columbia College Chicago called Chemistry of Art and Color and is currently working on a course called Chemistry of Art Conservation.

Media Production Center featured on Chicago Tonight - WTTW

Remodeled 3rd Floor & Expansion of Art Book Collection

Coming next month a large section of the Art Book Collection - call numbers from 700-739 - will be moved to the 3rd Floor of the library. This move will free up space on the 4th Floor and will eliminate the overflow areas in the 770's, 780's and 790's. Please bear with us while this major shifting of materials takes place. We think the end result will be well worth the disruption!

In addition to the book shift, the 3rd Floor West has been completely remodeled and will include additional computer stations, furniture and seating and two new study rooms.

Starting on Monday, February 1st the call number ranges for each floor will be as follows:

Archie Lieberman Photographs and Collection

A collection of photographs by Archie Lieberman are on display in the library through January 25th. The collection is viewable on the Library 2nd Floor West, 3rd Floor West, and 3rd Floor North.

The Columbia College Chicago Archives holds the definitive collection of Archie Lieberman material that chronicles the professional, creative life of this working photographer and author.

The Archie Lieberman Collection contains the work of a professional photojournalist from the 1950s to the early 2000s. His photographs appeared in magazines such as Look, Life, and Time and he worked for Black Star Agency and for corporations like Land’s End, Acme Steel, and Inland Steel. His photographs have been exhibited in the United States and abroad and he also was author of or photographer for over twenty books. The job notebooks he kept allows access to the many prints, slides, negatives, correspondence, and photographs in his collection.

His passion for his work is best seen in two the multi-decade photographic projects, Farm Boy and Neighbors, that capture American farm life in Illinois. He also worked with Ray Bradbury to produce The Mummies of Guanajuato, with his photographs of the preserved corpses in that Mexican town that accompany Bradbury’s text, and with novelist Meyer Levin on The Story of Israel.

The Art in the Library program at Columbia College Chicago provides an open, supportive and inviting setting to showcase the talent and creativity of our own community of artists. Since its inception in 2002, Art in the Library has offered library visitors the opportunity to experience the rich cultural diversity and progressive attitudes which thrive in the Columbia environment.

Presenting the work of Columbia College Chicago students, faculty, staff and alumni, the Art in the Library program exhibits works in all forms of visual arts, including sculpture, painting, drawings, and paper and book arts. Exhibitions by different artists are shown quarterly on a rotating basis.

The Art in the Library Committee welcomes all Columbia College Chicago artists to submit work for consideration.
